I have thrown out my warranty, am I out of luck?

Subject: Contact from your website

I bought a Proscan flat panel tv from Wal-Mart about 6 months ago. Just recently, the picture went out. I can hear what's on, but the tv screen is black. I contacted Wal-Mart and they said that the warranty with Proscan is for a year, and that they (Wal-Mart), don't accept returns over 90 days. I have thrown out my warranty (or can't find it). However, I can prove the transaction date through Wal-Mart's site since I ordered it online.

In a nutshell... how badly am I stuck? What do you recommend I do? I paid $700 for the tv.

Thank you!

Hi V.,

Thank you for contacting Service Care Appliance & TV Repair.

First of all, I don't think you're stuck. As long as the TV problems aren't caused by abuse or physical damage, the company who made it has an obligation to provide you with service or replacement according to the terms of their warranty (which *usually* is one year parts and labor).

Not having the receipt is a small hitch, but can probably be easily overcome.

Number one, is there a manufacture date listed on the back of the television? If so, and if it's less than a year since it was manufactured, it *has* to be in warranty and you don't need a receipt.

Number two, the proof of your purchase online is probably good enough as a receipt anyway.

Is there a telephone number or address on the back of the television? Proscan used to be an RCA brand, and many web references refer back that way, but Proscan is now being manufactured by another company to my knowledge, and it would help me to refer you to the right place if I knew exactly who made the TV.

I really think you should be able to get service for this problem at (virtually) no expense of your own, unless they ask you to ship it to them (which I hope they don't do). You're in warranty, and it shouldn't take much to prove it.

If you're having trouble deciphering the back of the TV, feel free to send me close-up pictures and I'll see what I can get out of it.

Also, unless it's an old website, this might be the new company who's handling the warranty for this product:

I hope this helps!
