You can read more about plasma televisions in Wikipedia:

A plasma display panel (known in short as a PDP) is a type of flat-screen display now used commonly for large TV displays (usually above 37-inches). This technology uses many tiny cells which are located between two panels of glass. These cells hold an inert mixture of noble gases (like helium, neon, argon, krypton and xenon). The gas contained in the cells is turned into a plasma electrically which then excites phosphors, causing them to emit light. Although commonly confused with LCD TVs, plasma televisions are a very different technology.

Plasma displays are characteristically bright, have a wide subset of colors and a wide viewing angle, and can be manufactured in fairly big sizes. This can be up to 150 inches, measured diagonally. Black levels on a plasma television are very dark compared to the lighter gray of LCD tvs. Plasma televisions often have a much thinner profile, withe the entire plasma display being less than 2.5 inches commonly. This is a size positive, but can be a structural integrity negative. Plasma TVs also use a lot more power than LCD TVs, and that level varies widely depending upon the brightness of the scene or setting of the plasma television.

Current plasma television displays are estimated to have a liftime of approximately 60,000 hourse of actual display time, which is about 27 years if you watched it 6 hours a day. This is an improvement upon previous performance of plasma televisions made in the past. Some manufacturers are now claiming lifetimes greatly in excess of that number, but only time will tell if their estimates are correct. The lifetime estimate of a plasma television display is not from purchase to catastrophic failure, but from purchase to the point that the display only shows images at half-brightness. The picture will most likely still be clear and colorful, just not the same brightness as purchased. Some contend that this loss is so gradual that most consumers will be virtually unaffected unless they compare their television side-by-side with a new model.
