You can read more about camcorders in Wikipedia:

A camcorder is the combination of a video camera and a recording device which stores the visual images captured by the video camera and stores them on some form of magnetic or digital medium. This portable device, aimed at the consumer market, records both audio and video onto some form of tape or disc. The camcorder derives its name from the combination of video camer and the built-in recorder inside the device.

The earliest incarnations of camcorders would record their audio/video signals onto videotape. This was an analog process of recording. While digital recording has largely replaced the analog methods, until the end of the century a magnetic tape was still being used by the majority of camcorders. Gradually magnetic tape is being replaced with non-tape mediums of recording like flash memory, optical disks, and large-capacity (but small footprint) hard disk drives.

Camcorders that use tapes for recording generally have media that is removable. These tapes are usually referred to as video tapes, or video cassettes. Some types of video tapes are VHS, VHS-C, 8mm, Hi8, and Digital 8. Memory-based, solid-state camcorders can have either removable memory cards, built-in memory, and sometimes both. Hard drive based, a.k.a. HDD, camcorders usually have non-removable media in form of a hard disk drive (HDD).

It should come as no surprise that camcorders that do not use magnetic tapes are often called tapeless camcorders. Examples of this are Mini DV camcorders and DVD based camcorders. If a camcorder uses more than one type of media, like a memory card and a built-in HDD, they are often called hybrid camcorders.
