The city of Mountain Brook has a rich planning history. To many, Mountain Brook
is thought of as a model for a planned suburban community. Although now located
much more centrally in Birmingham's metro area, the most prominent physical
aspects existing in modern-day Mountain Brook are due to the planners' vision
when this wasn't the case. Mountain Brook's original planning was the newest
frontier of community development as growth went "over the mountain."
Mountain Brook Village - 35223
Mountain Brook Village was part of the original 1926 design for the community.
Originally, Mountain Brook was designed as a commercial center that was
accessible by automobile, but characterized by the convenience and pedestrian
scale that was a reflection of the Garden City movement of community planning.
The village location, at the intersection of four arterial roads, unlike more
modern development celebrates this accessibility by automobile and features
the circular intersection as the heart of the village and focal point. Like a lot
of the community development happening under this movement and at that time,
Mountain Brook Village exhibits many examples of the Tudor Revival style of
architecture. Mountain Brook village, being the largest of the City's villages,
was always planned as a substantial center of commerce for the surrounding
residential areas that were originally developed by local real estate developer
and professional Robert Jemison, Jr.
