The City of Vestavia Hills is charmingly situated atop Shades Mountain in the foothills of the Appalachian Chain. Vestavia Hills has a breathtaking view of the remaining southern Appalachian foothills and overlooks, to the North, gorgeous Shades Valley.
Predominantly located in south Jefferson County with a few properties in the very north part of Shelby County, Alabama, Vestavia Hills is approximately 5 miles south of Birmingham's downtown area. The city covers 11,693.17 acres or 18.27 square miles. Vestavia Hills is situated in the middle between the crest of Shades Mountain and the Cahaba River to the south/southeast of Birmingham. Vestavia Hills' major routes are I-65 to the east/southeast, I-459 to the south of Vestavia Hills continuing the northeast, and Highway 280, which splits Vestavia Hills in a northwest and southeast direction. Vestavia Hills connects to Huntsville (north) and to Montgomery (south) via I-65.
Other major roadways of Vestavia Hills: Columbiana Road and Highway 31, which run south and north through The City; Rocky Ridge Road, connecting Highway 31 and Highway 280 and generally runs south and north through Vestavia Hills; Shades Crest Road, which generally follows the northwest boundary of Vestavia Hills and connects Highway 280 and Columbiana Road; and Overton Road, a continuation of Shades Crest Road extending northeast and southwest between I-459 and Highway 280. Overton Road connects sections of Vestavia Hills, but generally lies within Mountain Brook.
