Wikipedia:
The refrigerator, known sometimes as a "fridge" is a home appliance designed for cooling, which is composed of a
heat pump and a thermally insulated storage compartment - the heat pump is a device which transfers heat from the compartment
to the outside of the refrigerator, thereby cooling the fridge's contents to a temperature below that outside the unit.
The main purpose of a refrigerator is to help keep foods from spoiling. Foods tend to spoil from bacterial growth and decay at
a faster rate at higher temperatures. If a cooling/storage device keeps its internal temperature a few degrees above water's
freezing point, it is described as a refrigerator. If the device keeps its internal temperature below water's freezing point, it
referred to as a "freezer". Of course, many devices called refrigerators actually have a compartment for refrigeration, and
another for freezing.
Before the refrigerator, people used an icebox as the household appliance which kept food cold. It was literally a "box" that you put
ice in, which kept other items in it at a cooler than ambient temperature. The refrigerator eliminated the need to have ice delivered
to homes in order to preserve perishables. Modern freezers often have an icemaker built-in, or available as an add-on.
The dedicated freezer is a compartment which keeps the contents inside it at a temperature at or below water's freezing point.
Household freezers are usually upright like a refrigerator, or in a chest form which opens from the top.
In 1915, refrigerators that were practical for home use were introduced. In the 1930s, these home refrigerators grew in public
acceptance as the prices were reduced and alternative refrigerants such as Freon or R-12 were introduced into the market. At this time
history, approximately 60 percent of U.S. households had a refrigerator.
