You can read more about freezers in Wikipedia:

In the 1930s, the refrigerator market was expanded when freon was introduced. In the 40s, freezer units became much more common in commercial settings. It wasn't until after World War II that household freezers went into mass production. Automatic icemakers and auto-defrosting were technical advances of the 50s and 60s. During the 70s and 80s, refrigerators were refined and made more efficient as new environmental edicts led to the banning of freon refrigerants (CFCs or Chlorofluorocarbons) being used in sealed systems.

The earliest refrigerator models had a "cold compartment" to keep ice cube trays. Soon, when the Postum Company bought the rights to Clarence Birdseye's methods of fresh freezing foods, they began to process and freeze fresh vegetables in the late 1920s for sale to restaurants. The freezer's importance was growing.

In 1940, home freezers were introduced to consumers in the U.S., and frozen foods began to find their place in the average American lifestyle.
