Wikipedia:
The mechanical dishwasher, unlike the act of manually washing dishes with your hands, does not rely on scrubbing or physical action to remove dirt and debris from dishes. The electric dishwasher cleans dishes by spraying hot water onto the dishes, in a two-stage process: First, hot water is combined with detergent (which is released during the first stage) and then sprayed on the dishes. In the second stage, after the detergent-water is drained out of the dishwasher, fresh hot water is again pumped into the dishwasher and run through the same spraying process (mainly to rinse away soil and the remaining detergent).
There are variations in this basic two-stage process. Some dishwashers have repeat wash cycles and repeat rinse cycles for added cleaning effect. A rinsing agent can also be added during the rinse cycle, which aids in reducing spotting, streaks and calcium building. White vinegar is purported to be a good substitute for rinse aids, but this website has not confirmed it. Some dishwashers use a heating element to promote faster drying of the dishes, and help sanitize the dishes. The element may also be used, in some models, to assist in heating the water used in dishwashing.
The current automatic dishwashers' ancestry can be traced back to an 1886 invention of a hand-cranked dishwasher. It was invented by wealthy heiress Josephine CochraneModern to keep her fine china from being damaged.
William Howard Livens invented the first dishwasher that had all the features of our modern versions, minus the electric drying elements, which came along later.
