The most common cooking device found in the kitchen is the kitchen stove. Sometimes called a cooker or even cookstove, the stove is used to heat up and cook food.
Originally, the stove was used as a heat source for buildings, and models were developed that could heat the house and also be used for cooking. These were called kitchen stoves. Eventually, as more homes depended upon central heating, kitchen stoves became less popular and were replaced with devices that simply acted as cookers. In these days, the words cooker and stove are used to mean the same thing.
In the U.S., gas and electric stoves are the most popular forms of stove. There are perceived benefits to cooking with either one, but it's really a matter of your personal preference and the type of connectors you already have in your kitchen. Some professional chefs like electric due to even heating of food, and some chefs like gas because of the fine control it allows them over the heat applied to food. Supposedly, natural gas stoves are more cost-efficient of their lifetime, according to experts. It's really whatever you feel comfortable with. Of course, there's always the dual-fuel stove with gas cooktop and electric oven, if you can't decide.
Generally, if it has burners on the top and an oven, it's can be called a stove or a range. If it's just burners on the top, it's a cooktop.
