Window A/Cs and through-wall units

Many of the air conditioners in homes and apartments are simple, single rectangular wall or window units which are used to cool the air in a single room, or a larger portion of the building. It is common to find PTAC units in hotel rooms, since the PTAC unit will produce both heating and air conditioning from the same device. These smaller air conditioners are usually placed into a window or in an opening in the wall to allow them to discharge the heat removed from the air on the inside of the dwelling.

Window and through-the-wall airconditioner units have two fans: One on the inside that blows the cooled air into the room, and one on the outside that blows the outside air in and then out, removing the heat that has been collected from the air inside the dwelling.

A large building or dwelling may require several of this single A/C units to cool the entire building. For a room between 100 to 150 square feet, a 5,000 Btu air condition will probably suffice. But a larger room, say 1000 square feet, you'll probably need something like an 18,000 Btu air conditioner to cool the entire room. There are many variables to determine which size you need, including the amount of direct sun the room receives, the number of people who are going to be in the room, and whether you have a major heat source in that room (like the oven in your kitchen).

The use of air conditioners can grow as prosperity grows in a country, but sometimes it's more a matter of necessity and good health than a luxury. In some parts of the world, it can be downright dangerous to not have a air conditioner.

In the U.S., we love air conditioning (especially here in the southern states, where it gets slightly hot... ahem). Europeans do not share the absolute adoration of air conditioning that we do, perhaps due to more moderate climes and higher costs of energy.
